A growing number of automakers are designing electrical vehicles (EV) with 800V systems to keep up with fast charging demand and alleviate EV owners' driving distance anxiety.
Abstract

The 800V charging architecture features benefits including lower cable and battery costs, reduced thermal loss, higher system efficiency and longer driving distances on a single charge. It is estimated that EVs with 800V systems will see a penetration rate of 10% by 2024.

Increasing charging power can help reduce the driving distance anxiety and is achievable by raising the current or the voltage. Increasing the current will generate a large amount of heat and thus requires better heat dissipation systems and thicker cables.

In contrast, with the same power output, increasing the voltage lowers the current and thus reduces thermal loss, leading to higher system efficiency and longer driving distance on a single charge. Furthermore, the cables can be thinner when the current is smaller, which translates to lower costs from cables and lighter weight.
